Linda Mason

Linda told me that when she sits down with a model and she has done that with the many famous faces of  Cameron Diaz, Brooke Shields, Uma Thurman and Charlize Theron to name but a few she is drawn to their eyes. A new lipstick color can make you feel good but it is really the eye makeup that allows your to transform yourself in amazing ways.  Linda told me that even with great lips (Angelina Jolie eat your heart out here!) and wether you realize it or not everything you do is directed to your eyes. I have to say I don’t have perfect lips, but I have OK skin for a woman of my age, but I know I do have great eyes. On many occasions throughout my life people will comment that I have green eyes or grey, or blue,they are all right because my eyes change almost everyday depending on my moods! I was looking forward to learning more about what Linda had in store for me as she was creating my journey of self-expression through eye makeup.

Linda told me all about how different zodiac signs lean towards different color charts and she has designed color palettes for each sign….Linda had early in her career noticed striking physical similarities in women of the same birth sign. Even when physical similarities were not immediately obvious, personality,taste, and styles of self expression combined to produce strong likenesses. Each palette comes with an instruction manual to follow steps ABC and how to have a soft but natural two minute makeover…Now we are talking, I have to tell you my niece came to stay recently and she took 2 hours to get ready, I have no idea what she did in the mornings but I will be sending her Linda’s number for sure.

Did you know that when applying lipstick with your fingertips you can achieve a transparent tinted look, but you will get more coverage with a brush? When it comes to Blush tap 3 fingers on the blush and then tap them on your cheekbone and blend. The rule is that the lighter your skin tone the more delicately you should apply the color remember it is easier to add than to take off.

So what makes Linda Mason elements different from other cosmetic lines? well it is packaged knowledge, she says she has put her years of experience into creating glamorous looks into easy to use kits. Kits which allow a woman to be her own makeup artist and look fabulous in many different ways.

If you prefer a certain color or if you want to experiment with different shades, Linda can prepare a small compact that comes complete with eye,lips and cheek colors so suit you. I think this is a fabulous way to go, I don’t know about you but I hate it when I go to a make up counter to buy a new eye shadow palette to find there is always one or two colors inside that I will never wear, so what a waste. Now I look forward to experimenting with the colors Linda and I picked out.

So Linda sat me down as a blank canvas, am sure you cannot believe the hyperventilating that went on as I had to get to her studio without any makeup on! Linda told me that she would try different looks on me and she did. I did not get to see the outcome until she finished and was taking pictures to show me, but how different I looked to the times that I had put on my own makeup!

When Linda said let’s try a red lipstick I nearly fainted, I would never in a million years have gone for this color, but what a difference it made.

Linda certainly caught my best side! seriously I was more than surprised at just how easy Linda made it to change my whole face by applying different colors to my eyes, lips and cheeks. I no longer need to get up an hour early to turn on the cement mixer, I can now feel confident in my own skin with a little help from ‘The Art of Beauty’ and Linda Mason.

If only you could smell the picture!

There must have been over 60 Top Indian Chefs from allover the place including Canada and the UK all demonstrating their talents, even Padma  Lakshmi was there. The smell in the Met Pavilion was just wonderful, the aroma of cumin, coriander, garlic and hot chilli made me think of RAFI. So many people I got to speak to Maneet Chauhan, Jehangir Mehta who is a huge New York Star Chef, Gobi Takatin known as the Tandoor master, Chef Hari Nayak  who can make the best Chai Creme Brulee.

So I met with Chef Vikas Khanna, an internationally recognized Chef, restaurant owner, food writer and filmmaker, certainly a force in the culinary world. He told me about a recipe for Piri Piri Shrimp a favorite at restaurant Junoon..Delightful is all I can say.

One of the Chefs I really wanted to meet was Shipra khanna who was the winner of Master Chef India, who really inspired me and she was demonstrating there and then how to make great Indian Food. Very lovely lady or should I say Chef !

I am all about girl power and the next chef I met was Romy Hardeep Gill  who is no exception to the rule. She is a fellow Brit and deserves a huge Shout out. Romy’s family are from West Bengal, am assuming this i where those wonderful Tigers come from? anyway her family drew traditional flavors from around the area in their cooking. Romy told me that she would cook from a very young age with her mother and try to incorporate all areas of the country into the food.Romy has also always been very aware of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, founded on a nutritious, balanced diet and wishes to pass her knowledge on to others. So here is a recipe that she gave to me and the outcome believe me is awesome….Try this one at home.

Pomegranate Srikhand

Ingredients

2 Small fresh Pomegranate

500 gm Low fat Natural Yogurt

1tsp Saffron

6 tsp White Caster sugar.

3 green cardamom

3tsp Balsamic Vinegar ·

Take out seeds from the pomegranates in a bowl and sprinkle 2 tsp of white caster sugar and 3 tsp of Balsamic vinegar. Cover the dish and leave it for 30 minutes.Soak the saffron in 15 ml of hot water in a dish, keep aside if you soak saffron in hot water you get the amazing yellow colour.Crush the green cardamom seeds.Add 4 tsp of caster sugar to the yogurt whisk it well, Add the crushed cardamom seeds to yogurt.Add few tablespoons of pomegranate seeds to each serving dish, top up with few tablespoons of yogurt and decorate with few drops of liquid from the pomegranate dish. ENJOY!

My evening was complete, I met so many nice people and I want to help them spread the word, Indian food can be as mild or as chili hot as you like, do not have the misconception that everything is fuelled to burn your lips. I wish oh I wish that my American friends will come to dinner and I will cook them some of my favorites and hopefully convert them!

I always struggle what to buy my mum, she is 82 years old bless her and she has everything she needs. So I was glad that the Accessories Council invited me to their Mother’s Gifting event, which gave me inspiration. I am not sure which of these gifts to give my mum but I know which ones I will be sending a link to my 3 sons!

I felt so homesick

So many things have happened since I last wrote a blog post I almost have no idea where to start. My niece Katie came to stay and as luck would have it she came during Mercedez Benz fashion week. This was great as we got to hang out at some amazing shows and parties and we even got snapped by the papps at the EMU show, where they very generously gave us a pair of boots..

This was the first time in her life that she came to stay with me and it was really a precious time that I will cherish forever. I think sometimes we forget just what is important in our lives. Then it was the turn of my son to come and stay as he was in New York on business and I had a lovely one to one time with him. I love it sometimes to be selfish and have that special mum and son time. We even got a free Cab ride in the Jeff Lewis Taxi which was promoting his new TV hit show ‘Interior Therapy, this taxi had been decorated inside like a boudoir, love it.

The day turned into a disaster when Steve tripped on the uneven pavements in Tribeca and broke his ankle! so glad he got to fly home Upper Class with Virgin Atlantic, my FAV airline or I am sure he would have been in a pickle! Writing note to Mayor Bloomberg, ‘get your sidewalks fixed’!

So one of the things that happened to me recently was that as you all know I am applying for my Green Card for the US and as part of the process I had to have ‘shots’ as the Americans call them as we Brits say…’Vaccinations’ this in itself was a total drama. I am 51years old and proud of it but here I was standing in line to have an MMR and a Diphtheria, Tetanus and some other Jab that I have never even heard of let alone try to spell something like Depthusis . To me it sounded like some dreadful disease., but hey ho I was brave and took it like a man!  The best bit, if you can call it that was when they did the TB test and scratched my arm with a huge needle. Very unpleasant if I may say so and I nearly punched the nurses lights out when she said ‘All Done’! really? Seriously? You just stuck 6 needles in my arm and tell me ‘All Done’ where is my lollipop?

Highlight of the weekend is that I went to the Gym on Saturday, yes you heard it here first I went to the Gym, the first time in 10 years, I ache like nothing on earth but am acting all brave and went again yesterday which nearly killed me. Who said it gets easier by the day? They must be a Triathlon competitor! Anyway I will brave it and carry on I want to get rid of that flabby bit that I can tuck into my Socks!

I ran over to the store yesterday (Oh get me all American, of course I mean the local corner shop) and as I had not yet had any coffee I can be excused for thinking I was Hallucinating when I saw this fine gentleman dressed up like Barbie!

When I stopped snorting with laughter, I actually braved it and asked him if I could take his picture, he very politely posed for me! and then I went one step further, obviously my mistake when I asked him where he was going…. hang on to your beds, this is what he said…’I am taking the next ship to Mars’.. I obviously needed more than a coffee! Only in New York.

As I am a lady that lunches (A little too often I think my husband might say) I thought I would for once be a good wife and go take my husband out for lunch. I got myself all dressed up, hair, makeup and my new best dress, hold those thoughts there is a reason for telling you. We met at Union Square, the sun was shining so we decided to grab a bite and take it to the park on the square. We found a bench in the sunshine and sat down, life was feeling good, as we sat there just putting the world to rights munching away I looked up to see this girl ( I can’t refer to her as a lady!) I thought I was mistaken, had sunstroke, or really needed a new pair of glasses, for she was wearing a pair of jeans, had a tote thrown across one shoulder and that my friends,was it! have you fallen in yet? No? well let me paint the picture, she was Topless, yes she was Topless!! Now in the UK she would have been surrounded by Coppers, dragged kicking and screaming into the Meat Wagon, carted off to the Nick.  Fear Not Americans I will explain, This translates to… She would have been surrounded by Police, dragged kicking and screaming into a Police Vehicle and taken to the local NYPD HQ.

However you look at this situation, believe me when I tell you that she sauntered around the park and noone, yes noone, battered an eyelid! I, being British voiced my opinion a little too loudly to my husband, when to my surprise there was an old lady in her very late 70′s (being kind here) turned to me and said ‘ What is your problem, honey, men do it so why shouldn’t she’? Flawed was an understatement, if my grannie had been there she would have taken an umbrella to that girl, called her something very unladylike and averted her eyes. The police would have arrested her and probably sent her to the Nut house for assessment. How things have changed and how living in America never ceases to amaze me! Oh and by the way you didn’t expect a picture of a Topless girlie did you? No, sex please we are British!

Anyway I came across this brand of jeans called Marc Allison in California, the owner of the brand is Marc Flashberg, who developed a driving passion for premium denim , he says ‘that it is perceived that fit and comfort are achieved primarily through the pattern’ however he believes that the pattern alone cannot offer fit and comfort. ‘It cannot be just a beautiful looking fabric, the fabric needs to be able to move with the body, retain it’s shape and look fashionable’. Personally I could not agree more, I go to buy jeans and pick up around 10 different brands and take them to changing room only to be disappointed. They are either too tight in the thigh, baggy around the rear end, or even worse the waist line is way too low showing every little bit of cellulite a woman of my age has!

I am looking for a pair of jeans that actually start at my waist, not hug my thighs to the point of loosing blood circulation and are not ten feet wide at the hem…. so where was I going to find this perfect pair of jeans? Well Marc Allison came to the rescue and sent me a pair last week to test drive and here is what I thought of them….

When the package arrived I was a little nervous knowing that I am a fussy ‘jean wearer’ and I opened the package with a little apprehension, the soft feel of the fabric was the first thing that I noticed and so I began to relax a little. The jean material was really quite smooth and the color was a fabulous dark blue. When I spread them out they were not drain piped, so I was hopeful that they were not going to have to be painted on to my thighs.

I could not wait any longer and ripped off my clothes and pulled on the jeans…..Perfect they were really a lovely fit, my waist felt like it was inside the jeans not fighting to find a gap to hide in, my thighs were screaming out ‘hey look at me’ and to be honest I felt like I was a size smaller… The proof would be in the pudding so to speak and I walked to the full length mirror in my bedroom to take a look.. I actually thought the mirror said something like ‘You look hot’ but that would be stupid right ?

I was very kindly sent a range of hair products from Joshua Ladner actually they are Paul Mitchell but Joshua sent them to me… I have to say that I love all things hair and there fore they were gladly received and used immediately. Finally for this blog post, last night I went to the Style Coalition Fashion 2.0 awards which was a really fun evening, hosted by Yuli Ziv and Robert Verdi, of course as always the joker in the pack, Robert told so many of his funny stories that had the audience giggling and ducking for cover when he threw several pairs of his new sunglasses into the auditorium.

It was really nice to see Norma Kamali at the event and to hear her thoughts on where things are going within our industry. It was great to see DKNY and Prada at the forefront of Social Media getting awards. I attended the event with my niece Katie and my good friend Bhavna Juneja of Jammu the wonderful Cashmere and Silk Scarf company.

So now let the fun begin as the 2012 New York Fashion Week gets under way and I so look forward to seeing what the designers will bring to the table.

So having said all the above I made izzi come into the city with me and left him browsing around his favorite store B&H on 9th and I went off to the ink48 Hotel on 11th Avenue to see what products Kimmie had put together. I was instantly drawn to the corner of the room where this stunning Indian Lady was standing amongst an array of Silk and Cashmere scarves. Everything else seem to just fold away, I had to talk with her, I wanted to touch the fine silks and soft cashmere. Please do not ask me why I had this urgent need to talk to her I have no idea. Anyway her name is Bhavna Juneja and she is one of two sisters, brought up in New Delhi, India by a single mother. She came to the USA and got married and had two children, she now is also a single mother. I know so much about her already, I feel like I have known this woman half my life, oh and before I forget her company is called Jammu Style

I spent a lot of time asking her about her scarves, asking where she got her inspiration from, where the silks were made, how she printed the soft cashmere. I wanted to know everything about them, Bhavna told me that she has been inspired by the Indian Maharajas and it shows through in the prints on the scarves. The silks are hand rolled to perfection and the cashmere is not only hand woven but dyed in the spring waters of Kashmir. She has even encrusted her new collection with Swarovski crystals. Her collection of silk twill scarves have been printed with ceremonial swords, timeless timepieces, royal jewels and royal classics. There are truly amazing and the colors are so vivid.

I left the hotel feeling really inspired by Bhavna and her story and felt that our paths would cross again, little did I know that she had felt the same and the next day she contacted me and we agreed to have lunch. When I met her again we talked for more than two hours and realized we had a lot of synergy in our lives. I have to tell you that Bhavna is an amazing woman and I for one think that you my readers must check out her website as soon as you can. I ask you to pass the word to your friends about her, she needs all our help to make this business a success and I for one will talk about her often. I count her now as a friend and wish her every success for her future, the next time I see you, I hope you will be wearing one of scarves from the Jammu Style collection.

In the middle of last week I went off to LA to visit some friends and you know I was always under the impression that noone ate food on that side off the country, health freaks and no carbs, no nothing, well clearly I was mistaken as when  I ordered two appetizers instead of one and an entree the server looked at me as though I wass nuts…You can see why.

So after trying but failing miserably to eat all this food I took a drive along Santa Monica Blvd…fancy… and I bumped into a Polar Bear.

So you can see my trip to LA was really a holiday experience and now all the good work of loosing weight for my vacation is going to send me to the Gym from Monday thru Thursday to get those pounds off, because if not I will end up looking like this.

So anyway I thought that I had should get right back on the plane to New York to normality or so I thought and as I drove back from the airport I saw this man dressed in a newspaper.I am praying it does not rain otherwise he could be paper Mache.. I need therapy.

Anyway so before I sign off I want to show you my new venture, I have lived for 2 years in New York and never had a headboard for my bed as to be honest I could not find anything I liked. So I made one and here it is, I would change a few things if I made another one but on the whole I was really happy.

Anyway I feel very proud of myself…

I went to the accessories market week at the Javits center and bought a new hat, I so love hats and I have a huge collection at home now, which is doing izzi’s head in as he trips over them…ooops anyway let me know what you think of my new addition.

Izzi and I had to go to a wedding of his university friend Wai Poon in Hong Kong  and we had  such a memorable time. Hong Kong is such a vibrant city, we slept a total of 10 hours. The wedding was held Repulse Bay just outside Hong Kong and it’s such a beautiful place, the only downside on the day was that it rained. We all made the most of it and they looked so happy on the day and Michelle was a stunning bride.

Izzet and I spent a lot of time browsing the markets and I just love seeing all the fruits and vegetables which we have no idea, what they were. I would love to have had access to a kitchen so I could have experimented with them. But look at such vibrant colors and what are these?

Izzi and I had a wonderful time, but and there was a but, I left my dress for the evening dinner hanging on my wardrobe door and that turned out to be the biggest disaster ever. You maybe wondering why, well I am by no means a big person and if you are in the USA I wear a size 8 and if you are in the UK I wear a size 10. Now the thing is that every shop I dragged my OH around to get a replacement dress turned into disaster after disaster and that was because everyone in Hong Kong seems to be tiny ! seriously when I looked around that wasn’t true, but could I find a dress to fit me? No I could not. When I asked in fancy shops like Prada and Gucci and Versace they told me I was too big! were they kidding me? No they sure weren’t. Just as I decided to give up and go home, I walked into French Connection (Not a shop I normally frequent Sorry and all that Jazz but I don’t)They came to the rescue and I picked up a body con dress that squeezed me so tight that I couldn’t breath but it fitted and got me out of a huge hole.

Say nothing about the hair because that was another story, having spent 3 hours with rollers in my hair, as soon as I stepped out of the hotel the humidity hit and it went like poodle fur…I was not amused at all. At the end of the day it was not my wedding day and so I just got on with it and saw the funny side.

Since I was last here I had a birthday and there are no words to describe how happy I was with my pressie from the OH…. what is a girl to say when this is what I got…

I am now looking forward to the ACE Awards in New York which will be held at Cipriani next week, where I will be wearing the shoes and get this…. the man himself, yes Mr Christian Louboutin, will be there and I am going to ask him to sign the shoes. I cannot wait, so on that note I am going to go and polish my shoes.

We went to the Asian side too and had to take a ferry across the Bosphorus which is a really fun day out and you can see the whole of Istanbul from the ferry. We went to have fresh fish and believe me it does not come any fresher…

We went to the spice market and if you have never visited one anywhere in the world, you cannot appreciate the smell and atmosphere, it is electric. You can find the most exotic spices, probably even ones you have never heard of, do not know what to do with and some that I would be wary about using! I have to say that I am not a big fan of flavored teas, but in Istanbul I got addicted to the apple tea , so much so I carried a ton of it home!

Now you know me, when it comes to a bargain, I am your woman! we went to the Grand Bazaar , where there are more than 5000 shops it is claimed. Believe me when i say I think we visited them all…to be honest I didn’t buy too much this trip, or at least not that I am admitting too but the art on some of the bowls and lamps is awesome.

If we were able to change the light fittings in our home I would have bought one of these wonderful lamps, but as we are in transit this month of looking for a new New York home, I decided to wait until the next trip, but take a look at the wonderful colors. They made me want to stare at them for ever, I felt really inspired by them and I wanted to get my drawing book out, they gave me great ideas for the new collection.

As the week drew to a close I was quite sad to be leaving Istanbul, but happy to be getting back to New York.

I love the adventures we have and  I  love always coming back to New York, where nothing surprises me, having said that on Sunday izzi and I went off to the East village to get some provisions. I was longing for a good old English Banger! (Sausage for those Americans reading this) and we went in search of Meyers of Berwick, where they sell everything British. Normally I never feel the need to eat good old English food, but when it come to sausages I am a sucker. But of course you could not leave the shop without buying a pork pie and and a sausage roll now could we! Bang goes the diet again then!

As we left the shop izzi and I decided to walk home in the lovely sunshine and we passed a shop that had a rather strange sign in the window. I have no idea at all what to say about this, what it was about or what they were in fact selling. Answers on a postcard please!

I tried to find a pair of shoes to fit, but the assistant told me that these feet were not meant to be in shoes! can you tell me what is actually wrong I ask you! LOL

And then we went into the subway at 14th street and there was a Croc eating a child…WTH ? I have no idea what the artist was thinking or why the City allowed this to be in a subway, but there you have it.
